Winners Announced of Sundance/NHK International Filmmakers Award
(Los Angeles, CA, January 2003) - Sundance Institute and NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) have announced winners for the 2003 Sundance/NHK International Filmmakers Awards. This annual award was created to support new voices in international cinema and is presented to emerging film directors - one from each of four global regions - to support them in realizing their next project. Each winner will receive a cash award of $10,000 and a guarantee from NHK to purchase the Japanese television broadcast rights upon completion of the project. The four winning filmmakers will be at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival Awards Ceremony to accept their prize.

The winning filmmakers and projects are: Yesim Ustaoglu , WAITING FOR THE CLOUDS from Europe; Juan Pablo Rebella and Pablo Stoll, WHISKY from Latin America; Michael Kang, THE MOTEL from the United States; and Mai Tominaga, 100% PURE WOOL from Japan. Each Award-winner was selected by an International Jury on the strengths of their next script and their past work (features, shorts, etc.). The International Jury members included Darren Aronofsky, Hector Babenco, Tim Blake Nelson, Jill Sprecher, Toshio Endo, Kazuo Kuroi, and Shunichi Nagasaki.

"This Award was created to support new independent voices in the international film community," said Robert Redford, Founder and President of the Sundance Institute. "As our world continues to change, we must ensure that these voices continue to be heard, and the stories that teach us so much about our world continue to be shared."

Established in 1996, the Sundance/NHK International Filmmakers Award was created to honor and support the next generation of independent filmmakers from four different global regions: USA, Europe, Latin America, and Japan. In addition to the cash award and the broadcast guarantee, Sundance works closely with the Award recipients throughout the year by providing creative support and assistance in seeking out opportunities to finance and distribute their projects.

Past Award recipients include the highly acclaimed CENTRAL STATION (Walter Salles, Brazil), SMOKE SIGNALS (Chris Eyre, USA), THINGS YOU CAN TELL JUST BY LOOKING AT HER (Rodrigo Garcia, USA), LIFT (DeMane Davis and Khari Streeter, USA), LA CIENAGA, (Lucrecia Martel, Argentina) LAUNDRY (Junichi Mori, Japan); EVERY STEWARDESS GOES TO HEAVEN (Daniel Burman, Argentina). Upcoming projects include: THE SLEEP DEALER (Alex Rivera, USA); CRONICAS (Sebastian Cordero, Ecuador); THE BLEATING OF SHEEP (Gjergj Zhuvani, Albania); THE MAN WHO WIPES MIRRORS (Seisoku Kajita, Japan); and FINDING OUT (Carine Adler, England). Past Award recipients screening at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival include WOMAN OF WATER (Hidenori Sugimori, Japan) and THE MUDGE BOY (Michael Burke, USA).
