20.05.02 Sundance Institute Teams with Spy Hop To Offer REAL STORIES |
(Salt Lake City, UT, May 2002) - Sundance Institute and Spy Hop Productions have announced a new collaboration to present and expand Sundance Institute&';s Youth Documentary Workshop - a program dedicated to introducing Utah&';s youth to the art and craft of documentary filmmaking. REAL STORIES: SUNDANCE INSTITUTE&';S YOUTH DOCUMENTARY WORKSHOP AT SPY HOP PRODUCTIONS, formerly known as Gen-Y Summer Film Camp, is an expanded three-week Salt Lake County program designed to encourage youth to find their voices, realize their stories, and become critical filmmakers. REAL STORIES will be held June 24 - July 12 at Spy Hop&';s state of the art facilities in Salt Lake City&';s historic ArtSpace District.
REAL STORIES introduces ten students to the world of non-fiction filmmaking in a professional and encouraging environment. Under the mentorship of media professionals, REAL STORIES participants will explore the boundaries of their creativity and learn to take artistic risks, while learning the intricacies of documentary filmmaking. Using digital cameras and computer editing systems provided by Spy Hop, each participant will plan, write, shoot, edit, and produce a short documentary film. This unique hands-on program will also include guest appearances by Sundance Film Festival filmmakers who screen their films, answer questions, and offer creative feedback to the participants.
"We are excited to be joining forces with Spy Hop to present REAL STORIES," said Meredith Lavitt, Senior Manager of the Sundance Documentary Film Program. "By co-hosting this program, we are able to broaden the scope of the workshop and empower participants to think of themselves as young artists. Spy Hop&';s creative environment, professional equipment and experience with youth media, are instrumental in the growth of the program."
"This collaboration with Sundance will help ensure that youth voices are seen and heard in our community," explained Rick Wray, Executive Director, Spy Hop Productions. "Having access to the Sundance Institute&';s resources and Sundance Film Festival filmmakers is an amazing opportunity for local high school students. The synergy of dynamic young minds combined with the resources provided by Sundance and Spy Hop Productions will produce some compelling documentaries. I&';m eager to see the final products."
REAL STORIES is made possible through the generous support of the Salt Lake County Zoo, Arts and Parks Program.
