(Salt Lake City, UT, May 2002) - The Sundance Institute announced that applications for the 17th Annual Independent Producers Conference are now available online at www.sundance.org. The Independent Producers Conference covers topics ranging from a general overview of the state of independent filmmaking to comprehensive discussions about film financing. The annual conference offers producers, writers, and directors the opportunity to meet their professional colleagues, and explore issues unique to the business of independent filmmaking. Held in the informal setting of Sundance, Utah, the 17th Annual Independent Producers Conference takes place August 1-4, 2002.
During an intensive four days, participants will attend panel discussions and small group sessions that address the issues affecting the development, production, financing, distribution, and marketing of independent films. Evening events feature social gatherings and preview screenings of new independent films, followed by discussions with the filmmakers. Designed to encourage participants to apply these discussions to their own projects, the goal of the conference is to help filmmakers find resources to develop their films and to enhance their options for production and distribution.
"This year&';s conference was designed to reflect the constantly changing atmosphere of independent filmmaking," explained Conference programmer Geoffrey Gilmore, Director of the Sundance Film Festival. "Our panels cover everything from new technology available to filmmakers, to trends in film financing, to how to work with smaller budgets."
PANEL DESCRIPTIONS:
HOW TO MAKE A FEATURE FOR UNDER $500,000: The evolution of independent filmmaking in the new millennium continues to reflect the tensions and new initiatives now emerging in a very crowded and competitive theatrical arena. The spectrum of independent production now takes full advantage of new technologies, new sources of funding and distribution, and an array of low budget methods and experience. This year&';s producers forum reviews contemporary independent filmmaking, focusing on the wealth of new opportunities that can help get a film made.
FINANCING THE INDEPENDENT FILM: The definition of independent filmmaking is hard to define, but many would argue that it begins with the source of financing. This panel focuses on avenues for producing independent films, with emphasis on "alternative" funding, including cable, equity partnerships, and international co-production and pre-sales.
WHAT&';S GOING ON WITH INDEPENDENT FILMMAKING?: This special conversation will be held on Friday evening to address the effects of the economy, the changing Independent film universe and post-9/11 politics and sensibilities.
PITCHING: One of the most important skills, a good pitch must be intelligent and succinct, yet present the essence of the story. Our expert panel will critique and direct participants as they present their projects.
MARKETING & DISTRIBUTION: The heads of several major independent distribution companies will talk about the present state of independent filmmaking and how their companies are coping with changes.
